Our Saffron operation
Saffron has long been known as the world’s most precious spice.

Its rarity lies in the painstaking way it must be grown and harvested: each autumn flower produces only three delicate red stigmas, all of which must be hand-picked at dawn. It takes thousands of flowers — and a great deal of space — to produce even a small quantity. The soil must be perfectly drained, and continued wet weather will harm the corms, which is why in Wales we grow them in polytunnels.
This combination of rarity, care, and effort is what gives saffron its distinctive colour, flavour, and wellbeing benefits.
We are the only tea growers and makers in the UK who grow the saffron we include in our blends.
A polytunnel is too small to grow all the saffron we use, so each blend includes a few homegrown strands, thoughtfully supplemented with saffron from trusted partners who share our standards. This ensures every cup carries the depth, colour, and wellbeing qualities saffron is prized for.
